Mine Day
Mine Day commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Grand Opening of the Mining Museum on August 21, 1971, and the 45th Anniversary of the re-opening of the Bevans Mine in 1976. It is a celebration of the pioneering spirit of ingenuity, inquiry, enterprise, and development that shaped the Upper Mississippi Valley Lead-Zinc Mining District as a whole – as well as our museum campus. Join us for a day of earth science and industrial crafts fun and festivities, with programming from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All day, enjoy family programming including the “Mini-Mill” Treasure Table activity, Earth Science, Gem, and Mineral Exhibition, Hands-On Lapidary Arts and Crafts, and live acoustic music by Corey Jenny. Visitors can enjoy a Lead Pour & Casting at noon, carbide lamp, black powder, and rocketry demonstrations at 1 and 3 p.m., and a pneumatic mining drill will be in operation from noon to 4 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. Steve Bussan, author of “Mining In the Driftless,” will deliver a talk and book signing. Guided Mine Tours and Train Rides will be half price and extra tours will be offered throughout the day. Reservations are suggested but not required.
