Introduction to Gas Forge Blacksmithing: The Basics
We will begin with an in-depth introduction to the gas forge—covering everything from safety, setting up the propane tank valves, starting procedures, heating techniques, efficient usage, and finally how to shut down the forge safely. We’ll cover available tools, such as the belt sander, band saw, wheel grinder and drill press, and proper use of the anvils, vices, hammers and tongs. This class will teach the basic skills of drawing, tapering, and twisting, and how to apply these skills to make a variety of functional hooks and leaves. On day two we will be drawing and tapering for a specific project: a key hanger. We will work with round and bar stock, rivet the hooks, and hot punch holes. Materials Fee includes: metal, stock, use of tools, and any finishing materials.Class size 6Student Supply List Wear cotton or non-acrylic outerwear and leather full-coverage shoes.
