Japanese Boro Mending
Inspired by the Japanese hand-stitching “Boro” tradition of mending, we will use improvisation and hand-stitching to create rich textures that pay homage to the upcycle and reuse movement. Mottainai means “taking good care of things with respect, making it last long, not wasting and re-appreciating” (Selvedge: the fabric of your life, Issue 81 Japan Blue). You can control your color palette using this technique, and Maday will provide denim remnants and pre-cut organic applique shapes to enhance your design choices. This textile collage will reflect your creative intention as you work on your portable, sustainability-focused project. Your tapestry may become a creative journal that documents/collects your daily meditation in stitches.
