For
bicyclists, this is a paradise - the hills are some of the most
challenging in the upper Midwest.
Wisconsin is well known for its excellent trails. Two of them
are accessible from Mineral Point.
The Cheese Country Trail is a shared use trail which allows ATV's,
horseback riding, snowmobiles, and bikes. The 47 mile trail, which
runs from Mineral Point to Monroe, has 57 overpasses, including
a 440-ft. bridge spanning the Pecatonica River just west of Browntown.
Because the trail has a soft surface, fat tired bikes are recommended.
ATV riders might be interested in the Tri-County
ATV club.
The 40 mile Military
Ridge Trail connects Dodgeville and Fitchburg, near Madison,
WI. Most of the trail follows the former Chicago & North
Western Railway line, which has a gentle grade of only 2 to 5
percent. The trail is open for hiking, biking, snowmobiling and
cross-country skiing, ATV's are not allowed. The Military Ridge
Trail is now directly accessible from Mineral Point via the new
bike/hike only trail. The new trail is also a nice way to bike
to Dodgeville from Mineral Point.
Maps of both trails are available at the Mineral Point Chamber
of Commerce. Email: info@mineralpoint.com
A very enjoyable short walk can be had across the street
from Pendarvis State Historic Site on the Merry Christmas Mine
Hill. Check the Historical
Society's website for details.
