Gallery Night ART - Mineral Point, WI

Mineral Point Gallery Night
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 5-9 PM

The first of Mineral Point's 2008 series of Gallery Nights will be held on Saturday, April 5th. At least 15 galleries will keep special hours and host a reception from 5 until 9 PM. Visual treats and treasures are found in the offerings of fine art and hand-made craft, including basketry, ceramics, collage, furniture, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and weaving. Gallery Night is a charming city-wide celebration of art - an event that reveals the truly distinctive flavor of this community. Most shops and galleries are located in the compact downtown business district. With its historic architecture and friendly artists and gallerists, walking from place to place on Gallery Night gives visitors a real Mineral Point experience.

Next Mineral Point Gallery Nights in 2008: the first Saturdays in June, August and December - June 7th, August 2nd, and December 6th.

Two featured galleries will host special exhibits on Gallery Night

At the bottom of the hill, Longbranch Gallery (203 Commerce Street - 608-987-4499) has mounted a special show of new works for the April Gallery Night. Titled "Worlds of Whimsy", the exhibit features art by Mineral Point painter/sculptor Tom Kelly, and, in celebration of her 89th birthday, new works by Spring Green artist Peg Miller. Tom notes that being the featured artist on Gallery Night motivates him to make as much new work as possible. "Deadlines are an impetus - they give structure to my production," he says, adding "Gallery Night is a chance for both the galleries and artists to present new and exciting work." Peg Miller is known for her splashy, colorful painting. Often executed on furniture, the whimsical patterning incorporates both figures and geometry in tumbled, lively arrangements. This "Worlds of Whimsy" show will be up through April 27th.

Green Lantern Studios, at 261 High Street (608-987-2880), is hosting an exhibition called "I can handle it!" This show and sale of handmade handbags features the work of regional artists Kim Barham, Roberta Barham, Denise Benoit, Peg Cullen, Lavonne Erickson, Christine Hulet, Nancee Killoran, Kriss Marion, Sally Niemann, and Lyric Ozburn. A variety of traditional media (yarn, wire, beads, fabrics) as well as some unlikely materials are crafted with a plethora of techniques. The resulting handbags presented range from colorful to subdued, from very large to very small, from functional to decorative to conceptual. Gallery owner Richard Moninski says: "This show is a great example of the richness of our area's contemporary artisans. They're working in the exciting place where fine art meets fine craft". The "I can handle it!" exhibit will remain on view through April 27th.

A number of area restaurants will extend their hours to allow gallery goers an opportunity to enjoy both art and dining that evening.
